To celebrate Monster’s 30th anniversary as a global leader in connecting people and jobs, Monster launched a survey seeking workers’ insights on workplace trends looking ahead to the next 30 years in an effort to identify the evolving needs of the US workforce.

KEY FINDINGS

IN THE NEXT 30 YEARS…

  • 62% of workers think wages in comparison to the cost of living will worsen


  • 41% of workers think diversity in the workplace will increase


  • 18% of workers expect to retire at or before the age of 60, while 28% expect to work beyond the age of 70


  • Only 12% of workers think the traditional 9-5 corporate work schedule will remain common

Some workers will stay loyal to their current employer, while many anticipate changing companies frequently.


Workers anticipate working at:


  • (22%) Only one company
  • (48%) Two to three companies
  • (16%) Four to six companies
  • (7%) Seven to ten companies
  • (7%) Ten or more companies

Workers anticipate retiring at the age of:

  • (19%) 61-65
  • (35%) 66-70
  • (19%) 70-80

Workers think there will be shifts in the structure and location of work:


Schedule

  • 53% expect that flexible work hours will be more common
  • 46% think 4-day workweeks (i.e. 3-day weekends) will be more widely accepted


Location

  • The majority (58%) expect that a hybrid model will be most common
  • 29% think most jobs will be fully remote
  • Only 7% think most jobs will return to being entirely in-person

Workers have a weary outlook on several key topics:


  • 50% believe corporate burnout will increase


  • 50% think workers having multiple full-time jobs will increase


  • 23% think companies offering unlimited PTO will worsen


  • 21% expect the gender pay gap to worsen


  • Workers are split on what they think overall work-life balance will look like in the future, with 40% expecting it to worsen and 38% expecting work-life balance to increase

THE FUTURE OF INTERVIEWS

Workers think the following trends will become common practice in the interview process:


  • 58% think AI will be able to conduct initial screenings with candidates, and 53% think AI will play a large role in email communications


  • 46% expect that all interviews will be completely virtual


  • 43% believe cover letters will be a thing of the past


  • 40% think that salary transparency will be required in all US states


  • 37% expect that less companies will require a college education
